I notice when I do some pre-editing in Lightroom and then bring the shot into PS it is in 16 bit mode. While in 16 bit many filters do not work. Is there any benefit to doing as much editing as you can in 16 bit before changing the mode to 8 bit?

Yes, 16 bit > 8 bit conversion disposes of pixels. It's best to do as much editing as you can in 16 bit and convert prior to saving.
