I need to learn to use Adobe After Effects, or more speicifcally, I need to make a 30 second MOV file for use as a 30 second commercial.

//adspecs.ncm.com/www/forms/NCM_Regional_Content_Spec_v7.pdf, page 11 has the specs. I have the software and have never used it.

Flash can be used as well, but they don't recommend it (i don't know it either so that's not really a better option).

Anyone here able to assist me in getting started, and perhaps answer a few questions if (er, when) I get hung up??

I'd be happy to help if I can. I'm no expert, however. I have access to AE CS3 for windows. I took a look at the specs, the frame rate is the only part that might be a problem for me. It depends on the source footage, though. Feel free to pm me and I'll try to help out.

what's your timeline like? AE can be a bit of a beast, and if you've never used it before...

Do you need to do animation / motion graphics?

their specs look pretty typical for hi-def stuff.

Video Copilot has some good tutorials on AE to get you started.

Thanks!

At this point it's gonna be a slide show type thing, something like an animoto video along the lines of //animoto.com/play/L86RtaKHAwLbobzhTqRjdw?autostart=true but without less 'animation' effects - most fly in, fly out, slide about, etc.

I guess the first thing I need is the content images/slides? 1280x720..I assume sRGB?

On pages 7-9 of the spec sheet from NCM, they give a list of suggestions for the still image assets. Requirements, if you were submitting to them to assemble the piece. Yes on sRGB, 1280x720 should work if you are putting it togather yourself, but remember that you can easily scale down in After Effects, so 1920x1080 might be easier to work with. Definately pay close attention to the safe areas on page 8.

Since you are doing the AE work yourself, you may opt for seperate psd files for each element (background, slide 1, slide 2, logo, etc.), as opposed to a single layered psd. Either will work, however. If you do make multiple files, be sure to set the background for all files (other than the actual backgorund file) to transparent.

If you use the film&video preset HDTV 1080p/29.97 in Photoshop, your guides will all be set when you open a new file.
