So I've been noticing recently as I've dinked around with lenses in stores and that my friends own, and this always seems to happen: AF-S lenses focus much slower than their AF-D equivalents on my D300. What's the deal here? The biggest bummer was the Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G which focused VEEEEERY slowly compared to my stupid little 50mm f/1.8D.

Has anyone else noticed this as well?

I couldn't say, Max, but it's an interesting question (the lens question, not the are-you-crazy question).

see if there are reviews for some specific lenses at slrgear.com
their lens reviews are pretty comprehensive and often include focusing statistics, so you may find your answer there.

Maybe the contacts where the lens fits into the camera need cleaning. The S lenses use the ultrasonic motor in the lens, so they need more power through the contacts. The D's use the motor built into the camera. Also, check the mirror for smudges or dust bunnies.

Well thats why they make so many different lenses. Some are cheap and slow and some are fast and costly. I don't think a 50mm prime is supposed to be fast anyways.
