If you're restoring an old cracked or scratched photo using a scanner, try rotating the photo on the scanner 90 degrees to get different results.

For example, if you have a crack or deep scratch running across the photo, then turn it 90 degrees on the scanner and scan 'along' the crack/scratch. I've tried both ways and this method reduces the appearance of the damage because of the way the light from the scanner head falls on the surface of the photo.

sounds like a good tip - you could even scan it both ways and combine the result as layers.

Exactly what I did! I had a 'horizontal' layer and a 'vertical' layer and combined the best of both.

Scratches, creases, and cracks all seem to be affected by this - I suppose they are 3D blemishes on the surface of the photo, and so won't scan the same way as a flat 2D surface.
