Weirdest thing just happened. I have an 8g memory card and I was going to review some photos I'd just taken (I'd even reviewed them on the LCD screen) and the entire folder of anything taken from this camera was gone. Old folders are there, but nothing in that particular one. The folder isn't even there. I put it in another card reader - same thing. Then, I put it back in camera, and they aren't there. Is that bizarre?

That happened to me about 1 month ago. The photos I had just shot, and viewed had disappeared by the time I got home. Oddly, an older folder was still available.

In the end I tried to save the photos using recovery software, but they were all unusable (the frames were all half black).

I have since stopped using that CF card. I haven't thrown it out, because I can use it for a digital frame at home.

ETA: The card was 3 about years old.

Yeah the CF cards crash from time to time, so make sure you back up! I know someone who lost all there holiday photos, and a wedding photographer that lost a whole wedding. The only real way to avoid it is to take care of the cards, and format them when you delete everything off them. Otherwise, carry around lots of small sized cards so if one goes you don't lose everything!

Ditto the thought of multiple smaller cards. One large one is convenient, but also encourages poor practices like leaving photos on the card for extended periods without backup, and of course increases the potential loss when something does go wrong.

Were in that position, I would try data recovery software, though there is no guarantee it will work.

May I ask what brand of card it is (was)?

It just seems weird that ONE folder is gone but all the old data is still there. I can understand it ALL being missing. OH well.. nothing on there that I can't live without.

The file system used on CF cards (FAT) relies on a table that tells what memory location or locations are part of what file. If a small area of the card gets corrupted, and that area is being used to store information about a particular directory (folder) then the contents of that folder may become invisible. It may be possible to recover data by fixing the table, or the damage may be severe enough that recovery is difficult or impossible.

I'm seconding kirbic's question - what brand of cards were these?

I'm curious if both of you had the problem with the same brand and/or size of card.

Mine was a SanDisk 2.0 GB CF card.

I used to have issues like this all the time -corrupt images, never invisible folders. Every one of the culprits was a Lexar card. SanDisk, so far so good.

This is interesting...we've only had 1 card corrupted in 9 years and it was a SanDisk, and since then the Lexars are our main cards.

So far we've had very good luck with Lexar, Ridata and Hoodman cards. I have to admit though that after the problems with the corrupted card, I download files from my cards as soon as possible, and format the cards in camera.

I do the same, yet very different stats. I have no idea why.

SanDisk Extreme III 8GB - I just realized the camera was turned on when I pulled out the card. That might've been part of the problem too.

Many of the Sandisk cards come with a recovery disk - if you have one you might be able to retrieve some or all of your pictures so long as you don't try and take any more on that card in the meantime.
