I hear you it is sometimes hard to portray scale in these grand mountain shots.

climbing photography is awesome ! it takes training and willpower to take a big SLR w\ big lenses ice- or rockclimbing and mountaineering. Just get good insurance for you equipment and USE IT, it's professional equipment and can take some harsh usage up to some limit !

I have no problem taking my D300 and a lens or two on day trips but the weight is an issue for multiday backcountry stuff, I'm not as young as I once was so I try to stay under 50lbs. I have taken them on longer backcountry trips but it is a stuggle. It has never been an issue of worrying about the equipmnet, the Nikon D300 and better lens are tanks.

For those who may be interested here are a few shots from our Week 10 and final trip of our mountaineering class. We summited Mt. Baker early morning on June 7th, arriving at the summit just in time for sunrise. Beautiful! All the Baker climb shots were taken with my Canon A650 IS P&S. This class was a wonderful experience and I'm glad I did it but also glad it is over for now. I do plan on taking the D300 on a few day climbs where I do not have to carry as much gear sometime in the future.

I have the rest posted to here:

Thanks again to all for the advice earlier in the thread.
