So are you planning on going with the PW Plus II's or the Flex/Mini? If the latter, you should strongly consider Radiopoppers as well.

Deb, I messed around with cables etc, but nothing seemed to work right.

Then hubby decided to simply buy the "real thing", the Canon transmitter.
I opened the box, put it on my camera, turned it on and BINGO - everything worked immediately and ever so well!!!
I have only used it indoors (which makes it super easy because of the bounce factor) and across short distances. I believe it may not be as successful outside (needs more direct line of sight) and across big distances, but at this point I can't imagine why I would need it to work from so far away.

I love the way it so easily works with the flashes in two groups, where you can assign different powers to the groups, eg. main light group A (one or more flashes) at 80%, fill light from group B (again one or more flashes)at 20%.

I have limited experience with it, but I love it so far.

I did'nt like wat i heard about the ebay triggers, $200 got me a Alienbees cybersync trigger and two receivers. Have'nt had a misfire, I shot these outdoors.

I'm not sorry I did'nt go for the New PW's with the TTL stuff. Indoor studio type stuff, I definitely only need manual. Outdoors I'd prefer semi-manual control, allowing me to remotely change the power level of each strobe to compensate for changing ambient light. But if I was shooting an event like a wedding, I'd prefer the new PW's with TTL.

interference outdoors will rarely be a problem, especially in a rural location.

Issues come indoors from computers, blue tooth, wifi, alarm systems, lighting ballasts, cell phones, 2 wya radios (cabs, cops, fireman, security guards, etc) and all the other stuff you run into in buildings (like steel framing, furniture, etc) and walls and electrical circuits in the walls.

I tried cheap triggers in the beginning and they'd work flawlessly at my home and outside - but some locations made them fire without my asking them to. I've had the issue on channel 1 on PWs in some places but never on channel 2, so I'm always on channel 2 now.

I went with two of the Pocket Wizard Plus IIs. From what I read, should I get really adventurous, I can get one of the new fangled transmitter thingies and it'll work with the Plus IIs. Had to have them shipped to my mom, though - they won't ship to an APO. I suspect that's a frequency issue, but seeing as how I'm moving back to the states at the end of the year, I figure I'd better get the kind that are designed to work there rather than here. I'll try not to inadvertantly set off anything while I'm here.

I really do appreciate all the input - thank you kindly, folks!

Good choice. I think you'll like them. They hold a good resale value if you decide to sell.... Now to get some more strobe/flash units ;-). The PW choice is fairly easy. I am at the mobile / battery strobe point now and that is more complex: Quantum Flash, Lumedyne portable, Elinchrome Ranger, Profoto Acute.... it really starts to get more expensive at that point. But the PW's are a great value for money and flexible too....

Grrr.... all my stuff showed up this week and this evening I discovered the 430EX has no means of connecting to the PW. I'm hoping I can find a pc-hotshoe adapter locally since mail order takes so darn long!

The new 580EX II has a miniphone socket for the PW (at last) and a much better battery door. Worth buying one of those if you can :) My last 580EX blew last week so I had to get one. Canon has a rebate on them now. I expect you solved the prob already though..

So I'm in the market now for a wireless system but I have a bit of a twist. I want to be able to have an on board flash(my 580ex) and still have two to three remote flashes. I'm not too terribly worried about ttl though it would be nice as an option. Anyone have any set up ideas on this? I know the new Pocket Wizard allows for a flash to be mounted on top of the hot shoe connector but I don't really care to drop $200 for that and then another $350 for two more receivers for the remotes. Any thoughts?
