My niece has a Digital Rebel, an early one, and has purchased a couple of 4GB CF cards. Her Digital Rebel comes up with an error code when she puts them in the camera.
I am not a Canon user, but I am hoping that someone here who has a Digital Rebel has seen this problem and will have a solution. She has looked for a software update for the camera, and also has tried to format the cards with the Rebel, and no luck so far. I didn't find out what brand the cards were.
She wants to trade me the 4's for a couple of 2GB cards if we can not solve the problem any other way, so it's not a total show stopper if the 4's can't work in her Canon.
Any advice or help will be appreciated.

What about trying to format them in a computer first? Perhaps that will aid the camera in being able to handle it.
Only issue I have had with my Rebel XT in that area is when I bought a 16Gb Cf card and then discovered my Rebel can only see up to 8Gig.

I have a 1 Gig card I will be happy to send you if it will help. I have plenty of other larger cards.

Which rebel is it?
The first, the 300, should be able to handle up to 8Gb from what I've heard/read.

Did she buy 'real' cards or some ebay scam cards, where they take old or bad cards and relable them?

Thanks Yo_Spiff for the offer. It would probably cost more to mail the cards than to just buy new ones here at a local store.
The cards were purchased at one of the local places like Office Depot or Comp USA, so they should be ok for quality. I am going to try them in my S3 this evening and will post the results on that.
The only other camera numbers she gave me were D S 6041, if that means anything. I think that it was probably the first model Digital Rebel.
Her dad works with the fire dept, and wants to use the camera to shoot wrecks and fires that they have to work.
I don't know if she has a card reader to use to format them with the computer, but will suggest that.
Thanks,
I will see if I can get more info on the camera and card later today. I will post a bump when I have more info.

And ask her to write down the error codes. Some are signs of easy to fix problems, some not so much.

The first model probably came out before 4GB cards were developed. I'd suggest going to the Canon site and either download the manual or look up the specs -- there's a good chance it can only see cards up to 1GB in capacity or something ... remember when the first cameras came out cards were often in the 32-64MB range. You might also find the specs at DPreview.com.

In case this helps: I recently got an Err02 on my 2006 Rebel with a 4GB card that had previously worked fine. It happened after I used the card to transfer some non-photo files between computers. Once I deleted these files from the card (via the computer), no further errors.

Here is the update.
I went to where the camera was, and inspected it. I found that a couple of pins in the card slot were bent. With a little very careful tweezer work, they straightened right out, and life is all good again! : )
The 4 gig cards work fine now with it.
That's good advice about using the cards for other types of files. I sometimes put edited jpg photo files on the SD card that I use with my little Fuji P&S. It will play them back, but they don't show up as thumbs. It does not seem to affect the way the camera works, except that I see extra files when I use the card reader into my computer.

This site is full of good people, and that is evident when anyone needs some help. Thanks everyone for the good input about this.
