Does anyone here buy liability or equipment insurance from the PPA? I'm thinking about paying for a membership just to get access to their low premium insurance plans.

How low?
From what I researched (3 years ago) it was no lower and not more coverage for the same price, more if you add in the PPA membership fee.

call around to your insurance company, state farm, wausau, zurich, hill and usher and see what you get for what you pay. You MUST ask questions as all insurance is going to cover or not cover certain things.

Liability - you and anyone working for you
gear (camera, lenses, backdrops, props, etc)
computers, office furniture, etc (in your house? make sure it's covered as your homeowner's wont' cover work stuff)
car/stuff in the car
cash on hand, at an event, on the way to the bank
advertising libel
loss of income/gear/place to work (if your workspace is burned/flooded will the insurance company pay for lost income and/or a place to work from during the rebuild period?)

For example: I shoot youth team and individual sports teams and it's not unusual to have $8000 in checks and cash on picture day. And I have employees (and independent contractors) working for me, and kids in the area as well as working in a gym on a nice (read expensive) floor that can be scratched. Things can break, fall on kids (or the floor), cash can be stolen (by an employee even). And the gear (last event had 4 lights, 5 cameras/lenses, $500 in samples plus all the miscellaneous stuff - $20 grand easy) all went to and fro in my car - one bad accident and I'm out of business! My insurance covers it all, with a $0 to $250 deductible depending on what the issue is.

I got my liability insurance through Marsh Affinity via the PPA last year. I haven't had to file any claims with them but based on the experiences I had with them just getting set up, lord help me if I do. They were unresponsive to emails and phone calls, only the person assigned to my file was able to answer any questions but I wasn't allowed to call them directly and they were never available, the woman on the phone practically jumped through it to punch me in the mouth when I told her I'd had to mail a form instead of faxing it, etc. It was a big, fat run-around. If I hadn't needed the coverage in a hurry for an event, I'd definitely have shopped around more.

That being said, the PPA membership includes malpractice insurance as well as legal assistance. That means if, for completely hypothetical example, some crazy con artist sets her sights on you and wants to sue you and otherwise make your life miserable, they'll advise you legally, go to bat for you and cover your losses. The membership is worth it just for that, believe me. :)

BELIEVE me, you have no idea how true this is. I've had 2 occasions in the past 4 year to use their legal services, and they were wonderful. In both cases, they backed me all the way, and I came out on top. Currently, they are assisting me with a case where someone used my images without permission, and I am SO glad that they are. The malpractice and legal assistance is what "sold" me on PPA. One of the best business decisions I have made.
