I read this thread today after being gone for a bit and actually got inspired! I picked up my camera for the first time in months! Now I hope what I took is just as inspiring. I've been in such a slump lately.

That's the beauty of these threads. They inspire people to try something a little different and take their minds off the hurtful comments and cranky voters. There is some good in the world afterall.

Just to add my two cents about Freeman Patterson: I find that when I go out to do nature photography I have a different approach since I've read his book (mentioned earlier in this thread). It has a lot to do with what Ursula said earlier: try to capture the essence of what you are photographing. I also find myself asking a lot more questions when I am out and about. Why does that flower grow well there and not so well further down the hill? What is that coyote looking for? There's insects crawling around on that blossom: What are they? Just some examples.

There's also a really cool exercise he has in another book. Take a coat hanger and bend it in to a circle. Go out on your lawn (or other grassy area) and throw it down in a random location. Take 25 shots of stuff ONLY in the circle. I haven't tried it yet but its definitely an exercise I'll be trying out.
