I have been poking around another photography website ( I know - Heresy) and found that images could be lifted VERY easily for use elsewhere. When I pointed out the problem and as one of the solutions I was referred to //creativecommons.org.

I was wondering if anybody had come across the site before.

At the risk of opening a huge can of worms, I would be interested to know what everybody thinks.

Not quite clear to me what your concern is.

Generally you are free ot license your photos under any of the various Creative Commons licenses, but don't have to. If the site you refer to requires such a license for your shots and you don't want to use one of the licenses, don't post your shots there.

Depending on the license you use, you allow certain uses, but you don't give up all your rights. You could, for example, allow non-commercial uses, but no commercial ones.

Some people like to share their work free of charge one way or the other, and the CC licenses offer a controlled way to do so.

Not really concerns. I was more interested in what people's experience of the CC licenses may be and if they have proved useful or not.

I just hadn't come across the CC site before.

Well I had one image which was on Flickr that was used in Wikipedia. At first they (someone from Wikipedia) asked me if it would be OK for them to use, I said OK and they said they can only use it if I changed my default Flickr license which was all rights reserved to CC-BY-SA-2.0.

CC - Creative Commons
BY - by attribute
SA - Share Alike

CC-BY-SA-2.0 allows the user to do the following:
This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work even for commercial reasons, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms. This license is often compared to open source software licenses. All new works based on yours will carry the same license, so any derivatives will also allow commercial use.

I use the CC-BY-NC-SA license on all my photos. It's similar to what andrewt described, but doesn't permit commercial use. This way, if someone wants to use my photos commercially, they need a different license, which means getting my permission (and I might ask for payment). But someone making random art and giving it away for free doesn't need to ask, as long as they credit me and share their own work as I've shared mine. (I have no problem with people choosing not to share their work -- they just can't have mine for free in that case.)

Some people prefer to retain more control over their work than this license allows, but I think the world is a better place if people have raw materials to work with when they want to make something. Imagine if you had to get a signed release from everyone who owned any object you photographed. That's what the world is like for people who want to make art using images or music. Of course, if they want to make money on it, maybe I do too, and that's what the NC is for. :)
