antibiotics are bad...

add to that using them on the domesticated animals we eat - it's doubly bad.

what we are doing - in a scientific manner - is providing an incubation tank for the very same viruses we are trying to control. and letting the animal versions adapt and mutate, and become stronger.

antibiotics are over used - it's proven.

giving them to animals - well - who'd of thought - it would result in them being less and less effective ?

i'm going to go find a pig and kiss it deep and with my tongue...

messing with the survival of the fittest - rule - is a bad bad thing.

Ummmm, except antibiotics do nothing about viruses. But your overall point still has some merit. It's just not applicable in this situation.

*Cue panic and mass hysteria*

The first person died in the US from Swine Flu.

Plan A: Engage brute stupidity. Egypt has announced that it will slaughter every pig in the country (even though there are no reported cases there and it's being spread by human contact). Not surprisingly, Paris Hilton isn't worried about swine flu because she doesn't eat that.

Get your Swine Flu Shot before you kill your family and friends and finally die yourself !!!!

Wow. Shades of 12 Monkeys!
So there was a swine flu shot in the '70s, but it would be ineffective today because the current one is a different strain?

Oh yeah, I wonder if the unusual geographic susceptibility to flu-induced pneumonia is related to tobacco use, or maybe the fact that Mexico City has (has had) some of the very worst air pollution in the world -- I would say that anyone who has lived there a year or more should probably be considered to have a compromised respiratory system by US standards.

A few years ago a friend in the State Department told me that posting to Mexico City warranted hazard pay and rotations because of the air pollution levels there; so I would guess the cases in the federal district are going to have worse results. Also it looks like at least some of the cases of death that were ascribed to the flu have been re-ascribed, particularly Felipe Solis, the curator who gave Obama and Calderon the museum tour the day before he died, of what is now being called a heart attack.

to correct myself a bit. i meant to include vaccines and antobiotics in my original post.

though some vaccines seem to be pretty effective. my opinion is the disease that some of the vaccines are targeting might not be as adept at mutation - compared to the flu or cold virus.

small pox for example, mumps, measles, rabies for instance.

in the long term scheme of things, i think the vaccination process slows the spread and mutation of the virus, but doesn't necessarily make us 100% immune.

add to that the use of antibiotics, and vaccines for domesticated animals, and i feel we are feeding the fire for those viruses and bacteria that are adept at quick mutation.

why do we need new flu vaccines every year ?

what exactly is tamiflu ? is it an antibiotic ? it's not a vaccine... their website - no surprise - is pretty lacking of 'real' information.

It's because there are so many mutations. It's not currently possible to target all strains, so vaccine developers aim for the three most likely variants for the upcoming season (an educated guess based on "current" cases). Vaccines are not designed to kill viruses, but to teach your own immune system to recognize the bad guys. Even if mutations occur during the months it takes to develop a vaccine, they usually offer at least partial protection.

Tamiflu inhibits the action of neuraminidase (the "N" in H1N1), which is the protein that allows influenza viruses to replicate.

Hmmmm....either Scalvert is very knowledgeable on the immune system or he's a ghost account for Dr. Achoo. I've often wondered why I never see them together- I know their excuse is they live on opposite ends of the country, but it still remains very suspicious.

I'm not too worried about the swine flu. The one that really worries me is the ninja flu. If it can affect ninjas, then the rest of us are in big trouble.

Is it the great pain meds Im on or is it just me that I find it funny how close Swine Flu is to Pigs Fly...

Haha. Do you wander into Rant? If Shannon is a ghost account, I'm one conflicted individual. ;)

His answers are pretty good. Neuraminidase is used by the virus to release itself from the infected host cell.

One thing to clarify with viruses like influenza is there is not a fixed large number of strains and we have to guess which ones will be most prevalent. Two effects take place. First we have antigenic drift which is the small random mutation that occurs to a strain. We also have antigenic shift where a brand new version of the N or H protein appears. Drift is responsible for the variability with seasonal flu from year to year. Shift is responsible for pandemic flu. So it's not that we necessarily just have to guess from a large number of strains, it's also possible completely NEW strains emerge.
