Probably not the reply you are looking for but I have just been through this same internal battle and I went a different way...

I couldn't get over the f4 min aperture for the 24-105 and I couldn't get over the price of the 24-70, and the requirement to get another lens to cover the wider angles on my crop sensor...

So I ended up buying the 17-55 F2.8 IS with the benefits of 2.8 and stabilisation to give me the best low light performance that I reckon I'm going to get on this camera. I lose on range and it is not L Glass (although apparently uses the same glass according to canon), and of course it is EF-S but I have no plans to go FF in the foreseeable future.

After playing with it in the tropics for a month I am loving it. Sharp as a tack. Of course a lot of people won't want to make those three compromises...

Thanks everyone! I've decided to go with the 24-70mm after reading your replies...

Both lenses are good. The 24-70 has better AF in low light and has more DOF control while the 24-105 is a great everyday walk-around due to its lighter weight. If budget is a non-issue, go get them both. They are two different lenses for certain uses. They could compliment rather than replace each other.

Cheers!

I own 24-105 and i am very satisfied with it.
Pluses Image stabilization + 70-105mm - what could you wish for?

... I know that I would LOVE an f/2.8 version of the 24/205.
