Hi there, i am beginning to get the hang of using Adobe Lightroom
the editting options are nice to use, even on jpeg files
-But there is one thing that still confuses me, which involves catalog management. I understand that when u edit a file, the changes u make to the file are stored in the catalog on the set of photos.
-does that means with every new set of photos we need to create a new catalog? can there be a single catalog which stores the data of all the photos ever imported into LR?
-i am using cross platform OS, home desktop is a Window, where as my mobile solution is the macbook. If i were to edit a set of photos between these 2 OS how do i go about storing them? (if my photos were kept on a external hdd)
Thanks

I am confused too!
Does the Lightroom alters the original files?
I do use a catalog for each set of shots. But I suppose I could use a monthly catalog or even one catalog per year. I suppose that is a matter of how big one wants a catalog to be in relation with the number of shots that you actually shoot!
On the other hand I never found Lightroom useful for storing and searching shots! Which program if any do you use for that?

Lightroom does not alter the originals.
No, you don't need to create a new catalogue for each set of photos. When LR opens it opens an existing catalogue. When you import, the imported image go into the currently open catalogue.
LR is wonderful for searching as long as when you import you add keywords to your images. You can also search by any metadata information like date, camera, lens used etc. The search functionality in LR 2 is much improved over LR 1.
