If i remember correctly, the locations of the giant trees and groves are closely guarded. Maybe a couple of benjamins will help you... ;)

I emailed the second guy and he wouldn't give me the location, but did tell me to search the scientific literature. I think I have a bead on where to look. |

Well, I'm off after work today. I haven't been this excited for a photoshoot weekend in a while. I'm borrowing my boss' 16-35mm for the obvious need for a WA lens. I'm pretty sure I've located the elusive Atlas Grove and I've stocked up on IvyBlock in an attempt at keeping my nemesis at bay. woo hoo!
On top of that Brian Lanker is coming into the office this afternoon. I'm fairly excited to meet him. |

It's a little more primative than the "cordwood stacking" type campground up on top and more exposed to the wind, but worth a look. |
Couldn't agree more. I think Prairie Creek Campground is the best place to camp. Fern Canyon is brillant. The elk are brillant. It is just a magical place. I look forward to seeing your photo's from there. |

Well, we had a great time. The weather cooperated from a camping point of view with no rain. The mornings tended to be very overcast which didn't lead to very good light. I found shooting the trees a very challenging subject. How do you capture both their mass and their surroundings and do it aesthetically? I used a 16-35mm at times, but found this would minimize just how big the trees are. Here's one that I sorta like, although the 720 pixles is limiting and I find the trees oversharpen quite easily. This might look good as a 11x14 print. It gives one a nice scale though.
It's hard to come out of a new location with really good stuff. I would love to go back and try again now that I have a feel for what to expect. We did have a great time. The kids had fun tromping around and we did find the elusive Atlas Grove. While in the grove Laine found a giant pacific salamander which has got to be the biggest salamander I've ever seen (8-10 inches long). We visited Fern Canyon as well, but I haven't had a chance to work anything up from there yet.
Thanks for all the help from people who had been previously! |
