Wow, believe it or not, this is about my first time ever attempting a human portrait, formal or not. This one happens to be non-formal just randomly taken and not planned, and most likely poorly excecuted. Before I actually try, any feedback?

hey, do this....go ahead a try to set up real portrait setting and plan it. Use lighting, artificial and natural. Use different settings and backgrounds. Facial movements, smile, laugh, cry, mad, sad...You don't have to really go out get a 500 buck light set...just use what you have at home. A desk lamp works....i have used a desk lamp with a 60 wt bulb....and even took a picture of it too...However, just try to think about what you want the model to say to the viewer too. Just give a try and I like to see what happens.....This shot you have just seems to be a 'snap shot"....has you said it was...."not planned" Oh check out some work in the Portrait Challenge....don't copy, but learn from them and see how they use the light and other forms to make a great shot....hope that this helps and have fun.

ps...if come across my portrait shot for that challenge, run away! It was a ttempt to think out side the box, and got creative and got creamed....but there are many others to learn from. Good luck.

I've never done a portrait either. And I plan on doing it for "Something New" challenge. I hope people don't mark me down.
