So I have this really embarassing problem...

I can't seem to be able to use my second sb-600 in commander mode when I put the first sb-600 on my camera (instead of using the build in flash). Is that normal?

Perfectly normal I believe. One of the big differences between the SB-600 and SB-800 is the ability to control other flashes. Your D200 is capable of controlling both your SB-600s if memory serves me correctly. RTM.

If I am not mistaken , the sb-600 cannot operate as a commander but only as a slave unit

You would need the new sb-900 or the sb-800 to be able to operate as commander.

but your pop up flash will allow you to control both flashes, even separately, from the camera's commander control mode.

I believe the d200 will do this :-)

but once you put the sb600 on your hotshoe, the pop up is locked out, and cannot fire the command flash signals

Yeah, that's the problem. So I can only use commander mode when using the pop up flash? That's kinda lame :(

Yeah, but that's only a problem if you need on-axis flash. Nothing keeps you from mounting one of the SB-600s on a stand behind you, up high, or on a stand in front of you down low, pointing up.

That I know. It's just that I hate releasing my sb-600 with the built in flash because often, in studio settings, i don't want the built in flash to go off (so i cover it up with paper or something most of the time). I think I need to get those radio frequency realeasing things :)

The preflash just sends signals to the other flashes anyhow. It goes off microseconds before the actual exposure and has absolutely no effect on the image itself, except perhaps to startle a model.
