My girlfriend's computer is infected. She discovered it last night; pop ups, slow performance, and a Spybot scan revealed several Trojans. She used Spybot to remove them, but when she ran it again today to double check, everything was there again.

Spybot Identifies:
Virtumonde
Virtumonde.Dll
Microsoft.Windows Security Center.Firewall Bypass
Virtumonde.prx

Last night we ran the Windows LiveCare online scan; it found nothing. She has a 2007 update of Norton that won't complete a full scan. The Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool will download, but will not launch and run.

I am not an expert in the removal of such wee nasties. I'd appreciate any help! Are there steps I need to take, or is she looking at a wipe-and-reload?

Get rid of Norton for a start, that is half the problem solved. Kasperski or bitdeffender is way way way better, you will need a special tool to remove norton.

PS- I know my spelling sux

I have had similar problems in the past with reinfecting

There are complete removal instructions normally posted on the Norton Website (I am not anti-Norton like the rest). Search for the virus on the website, and in the information page, there may be additional steps you need to take to remove the virus. Follow them and then you are usually right.

google virtumunde and it'll tell you how to remove it ... takes a while but can be done successfully

A great, free, too-good-to-be-true, virus scan software system is "AVG" I've used it for as long as I can remember. Waiting times are slower but it takes care of all viral or infected areas of your computer. Just run that "AVG Virus Free" and your problems will be solved.

P.S: Norton is half the problem already, get rid of that. :)

Getting rid of Norton's is not that simple. One has to delete it from the Directory to effectively totally remove it, and I would strongly recommend that unless you are well versed in "computerese" you leave that to an IT professional.
