If I were a professional and was aked to do what I just did, which was to create a digital icon for the purposes of printing a limited run of the image, what would you charge?

I'm thinking professional hourly fee... $25 - $50 per hour. Sound reasonable?

(It only took me an hour and a half, most of which was generating an idea)

Also, let me know what you think of this. It's for a trinket for father's day. (A Key Chain flashlight viewable here.)

I was freelancing for a while and I typically charged up to $50/hour for corporate clients. I would charge much less for non-profits and charitable organizations, sometimes even donating my services if it was a small project such as what you have done.

For myself, I would make an audit copy of the artwork and donate the prevailing professional rate as a charitable deduction when I filed my income tax.

I'm not charging anything, because it's my church, but was just wondering. Ron B...good idea. Some people give an invoice marked as a donation, so they can write it off as a charitable donation as you said.

Graphic arts design fees around here usually run $50-100/hour, but people who specialize in logo-type art usually charge more. I usually donate or charge a lower rate for non-profit organizations, but be careful how you do up the invoice -- the IRS does not allow deduction of purely volunteer "services." If your invoice shows transfer of a material object (printout, CD, etc.) you will be on firmer ground.
