I've been using Flickr for a couple of years now, and it's been a couple of months since I have began seriously watermarking my photographs before posting them there. Flickr has a reputation of a place where anyone can grab a photograph and use it.

Well, in the past two months, I've sold licensed $1000 (USD) worth of images from Flickr!

I get emails from companies that want to use some of my photographs from anything from intranet sites, to annual reports, to marketing posters.

Some of my customers are:

o Amnesty International (used a photograph for an annual report)

o Volkswagon Canada used a photograph in a marketing poster for 150 dealerships across Canada (50 in French, 100 in English). Poster size is 40-1/2" by 62".

o NCS (National Child Study). For their website use.

o A publishing company for one of my photographs to be published on the cover of one of their books.

Although, I only upload low resolution images, I wonder how many other companies out there that took my photos without my permission.

Bottom line: WATERMARK YOUR IMAGES WHEN DISPLAYING THEM ONLINE!!

Although I don't generally watermark here at DPC, I usually only upload low-res images and haven't uploaded much recently (except for challenge entries). Also, DPC is not as popular as Flickr and other photo display sites. Having said that, DPC users has been known to have image stolen, so we are not immune here.

What with the recent arrangement between Flickr and Getty Images this probably makes a lot of sense.

The difference with my photos is that I licensed them on my own terms and pricing, direct to the client/customer. Also, I had to invoice them directly, too. It's a little more paperwork (I have a licensing contract they have to sign), with contracts, invoicing, etc, but it's worth it.

You have a nice watermark, especially the use of shading to make it unmistakable and hard for thieves to get around.

It occurs to me that including contact email, phone contact number as well as your web site in your watermark makes it easier for interested parties to contact you.
