Last night I was having trouble syncing to Canon flashes with each other. I had the 580EXII with a pocket wizard and the flash was set to master, on ETTL. A 580EX was on slave a few feet away, and the sensors of each flash were pointed towards each other. (first picture)
The flashes both fired (I could see it with my eyes) but the photo was dark, as though it wasn't even throwing any light into the picture. The flashes were both up to +3 and my camera was f/2.8, 400ISO, 1/200s. Everything was as it should have been, but when I took a picture of the flashes, you can see that the slave isn't even going off in time for the photo. (must've been a very small delay) When I turned the slave off (third picture) you can see that the flashes full potential was used in the photo.

Needless to say, it was all very frustrating and I only ended up using 1 flash connected to a TTL cord from my camera. (4th photo) How do I make this work with 2?

You cannot fire a canon flash in ETTL with pocket wizards. You also cannot fire the second 580 with the 580EXII when there is a sync cable attached to the 580EXII it disables the mode for master/slave. You need to shoot full manual on the flashes and use two wireless receivers one on each flash.
