My camera is getting a bit dusty. I seem to be getting dots in my pictures. I've seen the word sensor dust being thrown around a lot and I think that might be what it is. Whats the best way to clean a SLR? Should I try it my self or just bring it to a shop for cleaning to be on the safe side? How much does a shop usually charge for a cleaning?

The shop near me charges $75, which may be ok if you only need it done once or twice a year.

I've heard a lot of folks here praising a cleaning kit called the Copperhill system

I have a similar kit from someone else, and I find wrapping the wipes around the cleaning wand to be a PITA.

i just use a little manual blower that looks like a rocket ship to get rid of dust. you can find it at adorama or b&h or similar. for anything that won't blow off, see Yo_Spiff's post above.

Or you can just do what I did...break your camera and send it to Canon and have them clean it for you. In your case I'd send it to Nikon instead of Canon though.

For persistent dust that doesn't come off with several Copperhill swipes: Dust Aid

That's the brand I bought. I have difficulty getting those little towels wrapped around the stick properly.
