To all. We are going to the Patriot's day celebration near Boston this weekend.
I want to capture the pictures that we all see and ooh and ah about.
Any suggestions on how to capture a canon firing with smoke in broad daylight?
Lots of pics on sports mode?
ND filters?
I am open to suggestions.

Fast shutter speed and a mid range aperture of around F7.1 or so would probably do well. If you have a distracting background, maybe a lesser aperture, so the smoke stands out from a blurry background. Smoke is going to be hard to focus on. I'd say focus on the canons and recompose, or use manual.

Here are a some smoke filled shots I took at a WWII reenactment last year. I was using aperture priorty, at F7.1 and ISO 400. Shutter speed was 1/1000 or better in afternoon sun.I was surprised that I was the only one who thought to go up on the bridge to photograph the battle.

No ideas on the actual capture, but "Too bad about your 5D, dude; heck of an electrical glitch there!" comes to mind as an after the fact response :-)

Set your shutter for continuous shooting and trigger it just as the canon is about to be shot. That is the only way to capture "the moment" that the smoke comes out.

Went to the re-enactment for Patriot's Day in Lexington, Massachusetts. Very cold. Very Dark.
Event Started at Dawn and went for almost 10 minutes.
We had a good vantage point, but I was still too far away. Would have had to set up a blanket the day prior to get great seats.
I had to use the Canon 50D in manual to ramp up the ISO to 3200 just to increase shutter speed above 100 so I could hand-hold the 300mm zoom.
Not sure how the pics came out. Will post pics to let you know.
