I can attest to the "slow" auto-focus of the Tamron. I started out with that on my D80. After about 7 or 8 months I was still happy with the lens, but eventually I started noticing the front plastic bit that holds the hood on was loose. I took a plastic trim piece off and noticed the screws were A. Stripped, and B. Loose. All from mounting and un-mounting the lens hood for a few months.
I bought it through the Tamron Employee purchase available at Ritz Camera. (at the time I worked there) So it couldn't possibly be a return or resell from a store location.
I got kind of sick of the lens and was irritated that it wasnt as well built as the other lenses that were out, plus I had about a grand of extra money lying around, so I bought a used Nikkor and couldn't be happier with it.
I can say that I have now been spoiled though with the incredible build quality that exists on it and cant think of buying anything other than Nikkor now.
Now with the release of the 10-24 Nikkor (although it looks like it has a plastic mount) I am leaning towards that, or the 12-24 over the Sigma, Tamron, and Tokina equivalents.
Strictly for the brick-sh*t-house build quality. |

This is the auction I got it from:
Tamron 17-50mm for Nikon on Ebay
I offered $345 and they took the offer... now, at first when I ordered it, i didn't know about the built in motor version because we don't have it here is Canada yet... ( we are just starting to get it in this week on special order... ) But I heard about it reight after I ordered it... So, I quickly called teh 1-866 number on the auction page and told them that I wanted to Built in Motor version... they said that the one I had odrdered did NOT come with the motor (even though the listing actually said D60, which needs the motor.... so I told her that I needed the one with the motor, and she was really nice, she changed my order and sent me the one with the built in motor...
IF you are ordering one from them, don't bother offering them anything under $345, (we tried over here and they decline it...) but they did take $345...
BUT I would make sure to call them to MAKE SURE that they are sending you the one with the Built in Motor... if you don't call, you will probably get stuck with the other one...
NOTE... the model number APPEARS to be A16N2

Guud Luck! |

I know eh????
well, just so you feel more comfortable, they are actually being sold out of a retail store, Carmans Foto Which has several locations in Southern Ontario... so i wouldn't worry too much about any scams or anything... =)
with tax and everything, the lens came to $495 Canadian... the CHEAPEST I can get that lens for anywhere else in canada is $678....

I have read through all of your messages, i was also pondering on which lense to buy, i photograph a lot of weddings. I am going to buy the Tamron lense after seeing your pics, they look sharp and clear. I am very budgeted so hope that i am not going to regret this! Thanks x |
