What if we had a challenge where you were allowed to reshoot any challenge you participated in previously? If you have been here a week, you get to pick from Rust and Abstract (assuming you entered two challenges), if you have been here from the beginning, you can pick from any of the 200+ challenges that you entered. Example of the wording might be:

Challenge: The Mulligan

Details: Choose any challenge that you have previously particiapated in and take a new photo as if you were entering that challenge again. Your title should contain the name of the challenge. Editing rules are either Basic or Advanced as per previous challenge.

You'd be allowed to retake your own shot, do something completely different, or mimic something from the challenge you liked and try to outscore it.

It would also:

1) Give all the brown ribbon attempts a chance at colored ribbons to show the real range of their talent.
2) Give veryone who really understood the challenge differently then the masses a chance to try again.
3) Give you chance for feedback on your favorite outtake.
4) Get everyone going back over the history and looking at some great, but potentially forgotten photos.

The other thing I thought is that this might make a great weekend speed challenge since we've all thought about ideas before.

....and use the comments that was given the first time to enhance or recreate it.

Good idea

For convenience in comparison we should paste a link to the "original" entry in the additional info area.

This presents a substantial additonal handicap to anyone whose desired entry involves travel, seasonal events, or babies.

Also, do you propose basing the score on "best new photo" or "most improved over earlier photo" or some impossible-to-define combination?

I think this is an excellent idea; most if not all of us have an image we could re-shoot for improviement. Voting it would be kinda like an "open" challenge. We could do an infomal thread afterward on "most improved". Would be fun.

What about those who have not entered a challenge yet?

Do your version of another person's picture.

My version of mediamst shot. Mundane challenge I went through the lowest scores to recreate one of them in a different way.

Now how can I make Black Bear at Midnight a "6" :P

Hmmmm...very interesting. I like the idea and think I think it would be pretty fun, but I could see how people might get a little confused by it. There would be a LOT of questions that would arise as well. Cool idea, but I think it might cause more stir than anything else. That's just me though.

Great idea, but I please, not as a speed challenge.

GeneralE/Gina: Good points on the speed challenge. It was just a thought, week-long challenge is fine.

GeneralE: I would base the score as we do in any challenge: overall photographic quality. If the voters choose to go look through the original challenge, good on them.

goinggkiing: You are probably right about the stir. On the other hand, every week there seems to be two or three threads trying to guess how the voters will react. Here we would at least have some history.

This is very true, there is ALWAYS some stir about the current challenges. It seems as soon as one is posted there seems to a be a constant stream of comments from people that complain about the topic. It generally dies down the next day. I just think that with this challenge, it might be magnified. It also has the possiblity of becoming just another "unofficial free-study." Again that's just me. I won't deny thought htat it would be a lot of fun and that we would see a LOT fo interesting things. I'm not trying to shoot down the idea, I am just stating some things to possibly think about, you know, food for thought.

Technically then, you could recreate ANY past challenge photo, as no one would know it was you who was taking the photo. I'd be recreating some ribbon winners if you ask me. lol. Why shoot something I know is going to bomb? I do like that though...the idea of a clone challenge. Where you can take your best photo recreating a past ribbon winner. Hard to vote on...but it would be fun I think.

To get away from the bit about it being an "unofficial free-study" we could limit it to basing entries on our own past efforts as opposed to any entries in challenges we had entered. That way it would really give us a chance to show that we had learned from our previous results and comments.

This would make a great follow up to "Something New" as it would be going the opposite direction.

Excellent spin on the idea, that would be pretty neat. Kind of like when they did something old right next to something new. I guess the new challenge, instead of Mulligan, how about something old II.

Heather:

You COULD retake your best shots, but, generally Mulligans are reserved for when you shank your drive way off to one side and the only way to retrieve the ball is with SCUBA gear.

That reasoning works here as well. With 200+ challenges, if all ribbon shots were redone, there would only be 3 new ribbons, and everyone else would be disappointed.

My guess is that the 4th-10th place finishers would get a lot of play. They are clearly great ideas/photos that needed just a little extra. The folks that took those shots or studied the comments might have a slight advantage.

Gina: I'm with goingskiing on this one, good idea.

And with that, it is off to work for me.

Best
Bill
