Does that mean Photomatix is ok for Advanced Editing

Yes, it is fine for advanced. I used the free version for my recent Freestudy and Postcard entries.

All this advice Will and you are still going to be beaten by your 13 year old son Connor. I have seen his train pic, It's a six plus again this week. You might want to ask him how he got both the train and sky correctly exposed!!!! LOL I'm off to shoot Thomas The Tank Engine tomorrow!
