for a senior year physics problem, we had to drop it off the back of the high school football stadium.

We were limited in what we could use to build it with -- straws and tape.

The egg is an amazing design, sideways it is easy to break, so the chick can hatch. End to end, it can take an amazing amount of force to break, so the hen can push it out. It can be messy, but try to smash one between your palms end to end. If the egg is oriented the right way, it stands a much better chance of not breaking when it makes impact.

Did this eons ago... Used a three pound coffee can. Wrapped the egg in a layer of cotton batting taped up with masking tape, and then put loose cotton batting and the egg in the can, with the egg in the middle of it all. The can distributes the impact around its exterior, and the cotton batting keeps the egg from getting hurt.

Was dropped from over 100 feet and a helium weather balloon. At the time we were fascinated by the Mercury capsules coming back to earth, and our science teacher wanted to make re-entry devices. (Circa 1962) Our eggs were tougher then... not like these weak little eggs they have these days. ;-)

The larger end has an air pocket, which grows larger as the egg ages. The narrow end is probably stronger structurally.

I'm not sure whether eggs from a "factory farm" or "free range" are more likely to have thicker shells, but you might compare brands/types in the store.

Many of them do, actually. Eggs from "wild" hens are much tougher, the factory layers have been bred for thin shells.

Thanks for the help everyone. Got my wheels spinning in the right direction. We are going to go to a few stores that sell model rocket kits and hopefully grab a chute to use as a template. She will score more points for making and decorating her own. They can score a total of 100 points based on if the egg cracks or breaks or survives, design, decoration, weight, and overall size.

This is what we have so far, ball on left is one that came with the football that we used to make the egg holder which is pictured at right. They are really soft swimming pool toys so they are extreamly light. We cut out the center of the ball, then we took one of those mesh bags that onions come in, cut it down to size and wrapped it around the sides to give us something stronger to attach the chute to but still maintaining a low weight. We are going to add a draw string to the mesh so we can pull it tight to secure the egg while in flight, So far our protector weighs a little less than 8 grams. I think once we get the chute size and deployment figured out we will be good to go.

No matter what technique you use, simply boil your egg to give your daughter an advantage the others won't have. It will teach her how to get the "edge" she needs to succeed in this capitalist country.

Good Lord, Ken. Consider this an official warning to keep on topic, or face a suspension of your forum privileges. I am amazed and rather baffled by your insistence of turning every thread into some sort of political statement nowadays.

one of the rules is the teacher supplies the eggs, instead of us sending an egg to school we are sending money.

I haven't read every post but whatever you use make sure that it allows the egg to be upright when it makes impact. An egg hard to break longways, you can try this out by putting the one end of the egg in the palm of one hand and the other end in the palm of your other hand. You will find it hard to break by pushing it together.

so make sure it lands on the ends, not the sides.

You're kidding right? My post was a JOKE....suspend my privileges? This has got to be a Good Friday joke.

If I went through the last 1000 discussions, I would surely find hundred upon hundreds of "topic changing" posts.

Thanks Shannon, My daughter has been reading this thread along with me and she doesn't need to see that. I already had to come up with a quick explination for my joke about porn earlier. haha

One thing to think about if you are dyeing the egg. Vinegar is used to pickle eggs. Soak them long enough and the white sets and the shell gets rubbery. Ever seen an egg in a bottle? You soak it in vinegar and then insert the rubbery mass, then bathe it in baking soda and water to harden it back up.

I'm not suggesting a cheat here, just be careful not to leave it in a vinegar dye too long, or it might effect the albumen and it might look like you tried to cheat
