| I'm looking to get a wide angle prime lens for cheap. I'm looking at the 20 f/2.8, 24 f/2.8, and the 28 f/2.8. Which would you recommend? I'm not so much concerned about build quality as much as optical performance. |

You can get a pretty good sense of lenses and their strengths and weaknesses here from other users //www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showcat.php?cat=2

The 20mm is the only one of that bunch that I would consider for wide angle on a 1.6 crop body. 28 is closer to normal.
Doesn't Canon make a 14mm prime? Or is that not in your budget? You did say cheap.
It all depends on what you plan to use the lens for. |

On a 1.6-crop camera, 20mm is definitely the longest you want to go. Shorter is (much) better. My widest (non-fish) prime is 24mm, which is equivalent to 15mm on your camera, and I sometimes still feel limited. the only truly wide rectilinear Canon prime is the 14mm L, and I don't think your budget will go there!
You are either going to be faced with a third-party lens, or with a zoom. The Canon 10-22 may be a very good option if you are not married to the idea of a prime... but it is not all that cheap. |

I think I mis-used the term wide. I'm not looking so much for a wide lens but more so wider than the 50mm prime that I have. I'm looking to replace the 18-55 kit lens with a 20-30mm prime.
I'm not married to the idea of a prime. I am looking at the EF-S 17-85 which is at the very very top of my budget. I don't need to go as wide as the 10-20mm (or do I want to pay that price). I'm looking at the primes mainly because of the quality to price ratio as opposed to the zooms. It seems like (or at least with the 50mm f/1.8) you get more for your money with primes. I also do not NEED a zoom lens.
Thanks for all the input so far. |
