Although my score isn't much better than this morning, I'm happier now with a couple positive comments. Sure beats the negative ones that don't get the picture.

About what I expected scoring wise - but more comments than I usually get for the whole week. Cool!

and I've thought about sending mine to the subject site as well. They'd love it. Might take some scratching to find out who...

Whew - 163 images, 163 comments and ratings. My average rating was 7.46 which seems a little high to me, but then there were a lot of outstanding images with very few sub-par or totally outside the parameters of the challenge. There were a couple that were very clever and very much outside the norm which just blew me away - very creative.

I will say that it became very hard to rate some of the better images if only because they were so similar to other images - at one point I swear I was going to punch my monitor if I saw another night short from the opposite shore of a building or city. Unfortunately, a vast majority of these were great images so the angst was misplaced. :>) There were so many water images in one form or another that it might as well have been called a water shot challenge.

However it was enjoyable and I saw some great images, some creative, some very funny and as a general comment, overall they were a great example of what a digital camera and talented photographers can do.

Well, considering I never posted an image before with either text or a frame, I'm thinking this is going well -
except all of my commenters are telling me they're not too fond of my text/font. Oh well. At least I tried it. Once. I have only glanced at the other images so far but they look fabulous!!

Thank you for your comment. It was very helpful and a great critique. I love when I get feedback that allows me to grow as a photographer. Thank you!

Thank you Tom, for your comment on my image. I really appreciate your view and the way its been put constructively. I liked my image, but was thinking there was "something" lacking.. Your comment certainly helped me in undestanding what that something was.. :)

Cheers.

Getting similar comments here, but my font and color choice was intentional and gave me the look I was after.

Going up a little bit and doing way better than I expected.

Can we have such a thing as a cliche comment? I'm curious if anyone will escape this challenge without a critique of their font choice.

I am one of those guilty of commenting on the fonts. Some fit the image just right in terms of size and colour, while others IMHO just didn't look right - too big and/or colour used detracted from subjct matter.

Rest assured though I too am getting font comments! Just take the comments as you would any other, as they are. But if at least 50% of commenters say the same basic thing about any element of your shot, well, they could be right.

I'm pretty comfortable in what I do so I disagree with some of the comments. It's just an opinion though, and everybody has one.

You know what? I'll bet if we get some real postcards, we can critique the heck out of them. I may grab a couple somewhere to scan and post after the challenge. I'll be we can tear them up nicely.

Well, it is a part of the challenge as you are creating a post card and as such it would seem logical to at least attempt to offer an opinion on choice and selection. :>)

The problem with fonts is that a lot of users don't understand the nature of how a font is designed and utilized.

A lot of the standard fonts that come included with any document processor or image program, including script, are actually converted print fonts and not pixel fonts - there is a big difference between the two. Additionally, you have two font formats non-vector and vector the primary examples of which would be the Type 1 Postscript font which is bitmapped and Apple's TrueType which is a vector font. Unfortunately, you can't tell which font is what type which can lead to kerning problems (proper letter spacing within a word) and with scripts, odd letter alignments with similar letters like m, n, v, w which in overly blocked scripts can often blend together. Other issues are numbers 1, l (can you see the difference between 1 and L?) 0 and O (O and zero). Other design issues are color - color should be complimentary to the image and/or the graphic being employed and not become the focus to the detriment what you are trying to convey with the image. A lot of graphic designers will custom design a font to match the image or graphic and stay away from standard, readily available fonts for that reason.

And I feel a rant coming on (as a freely admitted font Nazi), so I'll leave well enough alone other than to just say that it was also part of the challenge and as such fair game for commentary. :>)

Later,

Tom

PS: My long suffering wife, the love of my life since high school often, in desperation in social settings, will ask - "Must you have an opinion on everything?" to which I reply "Yes". :>)

Sorry if I went off the rails.

Later,

Tom

I don't know what would be gained by that because of two reasons - one the color print process is very different from what you see in web color and the resolutions are much lower quality and two, the font selections will have similar problems as those evidenced in the challenge - commercial post cards are slap dash affairs and don't have much thought put into them as a general rule - certainly not to the level that entrants put into their submissions in the challenge. :>)

And you know what? That's the only thing that counts to be totally honest.

If your're happy with it and it suits you, you simply can't ask for more than that. Georgia O'Keeffe was once asked how she managed to paint in such a different style and still attract attention to her unique way of expressing a scene and she gave a very simple answer - "I please myself first - anything beyond that is pure coincidence."

Lester Hayes, the great abstract photographer said much the same thing once and you see similar comments from all the past and present greats - you have to please yourself first. If the proletariat doesn't agree, there isn't a whole lot you can do about it because if you adjust to suit the masses, then you haven't been true to yourself.

Tom
