If one buys a used equipment (lens/camera) from a private owner (not a reseller), and it is stil under warranty, can the second owner use the warranty services?

From the warranty papers, I see warranty is not transferrable. Further, any warranty service request requires the original purchase proof, which I assume is for the original owner. But that would mean anyone who buys a used equipment can never use the warranty service/repair if needed.

Is that true?

Generally, transfer of ownership with most stuff other than cars negates the warranty.

Which royally sucks, IMNSHO!

ETA: Check around, 'cause you can buy aftermarket warranty protection for applinces & electronics, just read the fine print carefully.

Thanks Jeb!

Yea its not clear. However, I am surprised then, that people ask for a valid warranty when they buy used stuff on craigslist etc.

Most warranty terms for camera gear state that they are to the "original purchaser" and not transferable. I have gotten around this by having the original paperwork, warranty cards etc, unfilled out and when requesting service you could state it as a gift therefore you don't have to have the original receipt as long as you have blank warranty cards. This will work most times for items that are obviously newer than the warranty. Example: I bought a used Nikon D40 kit with the 18-55mm lens off Craigslist. The plastic mount broke on the lens after about 4 months. Since Nikon had a 5 year warranty on the lens and I had the paperwork AND they have not even been making the lens for 5 years, they fixed it under warranty. Another little known fact: if you purchase a product with a Visa or Mastercard almost all the CC providers double the manufacturer's warranty on products purchased with the card. SAVE your receipt! Try talking with live support people as they are often sympathetic to repair issues.

Cheers

AFIK, its double or up to one year, whichever is less. And its "free", so I won't complain about it only being an extra year.
