Yep, I've seen it posted over at DPReview. I had not seen it posted here, and it is good information.

Oh yeah great...my mirror fell out in the middle of a wedding back in November 07....$680 later I received my camera back with a new inside.

Now where do I stand?

I would write Canon a letter saying that considering its a manufacturing default that Canon has publicly recognised you should be reimbursed for the repair...

Definitely wait until Canon Oz make an announcement then kick some ass.. I'm sure you are well practised in the art of ass-kicking.

Seriously, I reckon you might have an argument there. I know I will be sending off my 5D if they announce a recall in the UK - oh and a quick & free sensor clean is always nice!!

you'd think they'd have the same issue with any of the camera models released around the same time as the 5d... i wonder.

when was the recall posted ? because if they just recently realized the defect in glue - it might affect cameras that were released after the 5d as well...

the recall seems to specify they will reglue the mirror with - hopefully different/better glue.

i think the major amount of guts being replaced ( in your case ) might only land you a partial refund..

of course i'm only guessing - i hate to assume ;)

Well that's the problem...the mirror glue gave way and the mirror fell out...but didn't break....I sent the whole lot back to them, including the intact mirror and they said they couldn't reglue it and had to replace the entire innards...so that was there call...not mine.

seems silly to me to have to replace working parts rather than just what was broken...

but that is the disposable world - i guess...

I didn't have time to think....they were right in the middle of saying their vows and suddenly I couldn't see anything through the viewfinder and obviously couldn't take a photo...I nodded to my assistant and he took over my spot while I grabbed my other 5D. It wasn't until after the ceremony I sat down and took the lens off and the mirror fell out into my hand. I knew then what had happened. But it meant that I was down to one camera for the rest of the wedding, such a pain for constantly changing lenses. And my assistant had to pick up the slack and make sure he covered more than his usual areas.

Good news Judi got her deserved reimbursement and that the problem it caused could be handled during the ceremony.

Side note:
I believe that I received the email from Canon that was in the original post less than a week after I bought my 5DII. That was in January or early February '09. I remember thinking, "Oh Great, new camera and already a recall!". But quickly discovered it did not apply to my camera. Then a day or so later I got another email from Canon apologizing for the mistake sending the recall to 5DII owners.
