As far as I can tell from reading, the following is true:
If you put a 50mm extension tube on a 50mm lens, and that's on a 1.6 crop factor digital slr - your resulting lens becomes a 160mm 1:1 lens (extension tube equal to lens doubles the focal length, times 1.6).
If the above is true (even if it isn't), how far away will I be able to focus? I know infinity focus is lost, but what about 10 feet away, or 50 feet away?
Thanks in advance for your help :)

A 50mm tube on a 50mm lens should give you 1:1 mag. I am not sure if it will focus at 10ft but that should be about as far as you can focus if my memory serves me.

If I'm not mistaken, the minimum focus distance will not change with the tube, that is how you go from 1:2 to 1:1. |

The tube allows the lens to focus at a shorter distance, however, most lenses already have some built in extension so you can probably achieve higher than 1:1 mag using the 50mm macro lens along with the tube. The extension tube does change the minimum focusing distance though, that is how it achieves higher mag.

Yes, I agree with you, Greg. Mostly I want to be able to leave the extension tube on and still take "normal" distance photos (not a macro). Is that possible? |

Ok I'll take your word for it!
For some reason I was thinking that I read that somewhere. |

It really depends on how much extension you put on. Less extension means you can retain focus at greater distances. Generally I have found that it is not worth trying to take "normal" pictures with tubes in place. I just put them on when I want to do a macro shot. It is a pain in the neck sometimes but the results are usually very good.
