I just discovered by stupid SB-900 doesn't do TTL flash metering with my newly acquired F100 that I picked up for my photography class here in college. What does work is A, M, GN, and RPT.

M is a crapshoot on film; I don't want to waste exposures by flash bracketing, so is there a decent way to learn how to use the A mode in order to get good flash exposures?
