This is a new one for me (not that unusual probably) . . . I just saw it in a post and checked it on the web. Someone said that it's perhaps being overused. I am afraid of editing becoming more the skill than the photographing, also; but, to take a very good image and make it pop -- maybe that's not wrong, either. Anyway . . . do a lot of you use it? What are your comments? Do you think I might want to look into getting this? Is it a fairly "stable" software application? Thanks in advance for any help!!

There's quite a bit of info if you do a quick forum search. Another that some swear by is NoiseNinja.

The programs are used to get rid of noise in photos. Some cameras capture a bit more noise then others do. So the programs are used to get rid of some of it, but sometimes overdoing it ruins pictures.

A bit of grain and noise sometimes is refreshing.

It's very useful. If your camera introduces noise into the image, neatimage can really improve the clarity. It can make people's skin look better too, or it can make it look like plastic when overapplied. There are various tutorials you can find to try it yourself, and there's a free demo version which is limited but otherwise functional.

I bought the pro plus version so I would have the ability to use it as a filter in PS (PSe in my case).

Most digital cameras produce color noise in the images, the amount dependent on several factors including: temperature, iso setting, length of exposure, etc.
The camera's builtin noise reduction algorithms usually do a fair job, but sometimes the image is so noisy that it is almost useless. NeatImage or other noise reduction software is an essential tool for the digital darkroom.
Many DPC members use this type software and it is allowed under current DPC rules.

NeatImage is one of those things that has to be used in moderation. It is extremely useful to clean up noise in an image from high ISO or any other noise. But too much of it can ruin a photo I think. It just has to be used right, and a lot of people tend to not use it right.
