If you want to be successful in life get an education. Every single study ever done says you'll make more money the more education you have.
So it is with photography too. I am a member of the local PPA organization and they do an annual week long school. It's not expensive. Compare it to some of the ads you see in PopPhoto and such it's downright cheap, and the value of hte info you get can be priceless.

Here's a school photo. For those that are into wedding, Hanson Fong is there somewhere as he taught a weeklong class (for about 1/4 what he charges if you go to his seminars)

The class I took was called 'portraiture' but is more 'This is what I do and have done to create a studio that does over one million dollars a year in sales for 10+ years. First you...' and then Michael Redford went on to tell us in detail how to do what he does. How to shoot, market, sell, price - all of it. A Recipe for Success!
Here's the class photo - there are no doubt some future millionaires in here. There are a couple of newbies, but some that have been pro's for 25 years. Probably 150+ years of professional experience in this image.

There are PPA schools all over the country (texas school, winona MN and MARS (maryland) are the three most well known) and you need not be a PPA member or even a professional to take a class. They're are classes on basic portraiture, photoshop, painter, wedding photography, HS seniors and a lot more subjects!

I was looking into it today. Could be fun.

Can't really find too much info on the ppa site.

Yeah, I know. Their magazine...American Photography I think it is, has ads all the time.

//www.marsschool.com/
//www.texasschool.org/
//www.winonaschool.org/ ...sorry, it's in indiana not minnesota.

Winona is in mid june - I've seen carl caylor and he's good. I've read some of Mitche Graf's stuff and I like his approach to business, and the other speaker I know there is Doug Gordon - I'd like to see one of his seminars.
If you registered before Jan 1 it was only $399 for 4 full days. Till mar 31 it's 449 then it goes to $499. And that includes other smaller programs and all your meals too! Cheap education!

here's another school, week long PPA school in Kansas, and it's only $495 for the whole thing (but you can take less). A STEAL for the education one gets out of it!

That is pretty dirt cheap. My problem this year is that I can't take any time off, I have my planned vacation in July, and then my honeymoon in October, so I either have to quit my job or wait a year.

I am a member of the AZ PPA. It has been one of the most effective and affordable means of education and networking I have used. Anyone who is looking at making a career out of photography should attend their local meetings. You can usually attend your first one for free.
