I am looking for a P&S between $200-$300 with good picture quality, good zoom, but small enough to carry around in a purse. Image quality is very important, as I've noticed a lot of them turn out over-processed or very soft looking. I was originally looking at the Nikon S630, but it seems the few reviews I found give the camera a bad mark because of image quality. Any suggestions from anyone? |

Not in your price range, but the Canon G9 and G10 are excellent. Perhaps you can pick up a used G9 on eBay.
I have a G9 I take along everywhere and a G10 converted for IR.

How about the Canon PowerShot SD890 IS? Seems like a decent buy from looking at the specs and reviews. Anyone have this model or have some insight about it? |

I've used the Fuji prosumers - have had S5000, S5200, and S700. The S700 has 10x optical zoom, manual controls, automatic controls, live view, video (full frame, full speed, with sound - not HD), 3" screen. It fits into my briefcase (barely), but I don't know about a purse. Macro, super macro.
In good light, this camera does very well - pictures are not as crisp as a DSLR, but don't turn out too bad - especially if you can use Neat Image on them.
Disadvantages: Anything 200 ISO or higher tends to be grainy - it produces the sharpest pictures in super macro at 64 ISO (lowest it can go). Indoors photography can be painful - slow shutter speeds, grainy shots. Nice enough for a family snapshot, but not HQ digital.
Best bit about this camera is that around Christmas Wal-Mart was closing them out for $139 - retail on the new S1000fd (face detection) is less than $250.
Check out my portfolio - virtually every shot is with one of the three Fuji's. Then, click on the camera link and look at the best shots - the S5000 won a DPChallenge ribbon. The S700 has scored in the 6's. There are many things I like about the camera, but it may be too big for what you're looking for.

I keep a Fuji A920 on my belt anytime that I am out and about. I like everything about it with the exception of that I can't select manual aperture or shutter priority. It has a lot of presets though, which make it easy to get good shots in most conditions. It has a lot more noise when shooting in darkness, and low light than my S3, but it was quiet a lot less money too. It was about $100 US on eBay, refurb in the box. Some of my DPC shots were shot with it. The newer smaller ones are great too, with the face recognition, and not that expensive at wally world.
I love color, and Fuji does it nicely.

I have the Canon PowerShot SD880IS 10MP Digital Camera with 4x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Silver) and love it. Big clear viewing screen and controls are easy to find. Photo quality has been good.
