When you sell a photo is it proper to put your name on the photo?

Thanks

Some people sign, some don't, some on the back and some on the front or in the border, some sign the mat of a mounted print. I think the only time there's really a "protocol" is if you are selling a limited-edition, numbered print, which are usually signed/numered in a corner of the border.

If you try an advanced forum search, you can probably find a few other threads which discuss signing prints.

I was thinking of "Photo: Dexter"
Is this unheard of?

No, it's not unheard of at all, but I'd think it more sensible to use your full name, simply so people can make note of it and contact you if they like the work. "Photography by Dexter Balyeat" or "Balyeat Studios" if it's "commercial work" (portraits and such), or signed by hand with just your name if it's an art print.
