I took some shots yesterday at a friend of mine son's first holy communion. She wanted a couple of portraits of just her and her son and she does like B&W. I took many that I think are good but the ones below I'm not sure if you should crop it tight or not. I like both but can't make up my mind which one I should frame for her...

What do you think?

I like the closeup but the negative space on the right side is not doing it for me. Maybe if you were to crop it not as close on the left it would even up the composition.

I like the close-up better as well.

I read a while back something I will never forget. Painting is starting with a blank canvas and trying to include everything you want to make the picture. Photography is starting with everything, and trying to exclude everything except what you want.

The point? Good rule of thumb in photography is less is more. Just my two cents.

The close up is definately preferred. It is a bit too much on the left though - maybe give it a tad more space there?

Again, my preferrence is for the close up. Don't think i would change anything about it.

Thanks for your comments - I will definitely give her the close-up.

Close-up, without a doubt (or however it is spelled).

I think it would be a good idea to ask the Lady you are photographing how she feels about each?

Personally I prefer the first one "CindySebastianBW_s.jpg". I generally do not like to fill the frame with a subjects face unless it truly works and the subject is happy with it.

Just my 2 cents worth :)

A little too tight cropping, specially on the left
