In the event I ever had to show proof of an image, it says I must have a "direct from the camera" original. Do I have to keep the actaul image literally on my memory card? Or is there another way? I just re-read the rule (I was curious as to how the EXIF info was validated) and realized I had just been thinking to keep an unaltered "original" on my hard drive. |

Unaltered and Direct From Camera mean the same thing in this case.

you can store the unedited original anywhere, as it contains the EXIF info no matter where its stored. Only after its edited and saved under a different name does the info disapear

If you import an image from your card to your computer it's considered unaltered. If you do a little post-production (Photshop, etc) you should always work on a copy of the orginal. |

You can keep an unedited original on your hard drive. Just copy it to a folder there, don't open and resave in an editing program.
It's a very good idea to keep unedited copies of all your pics, just in case. It's also a very good idea to have at least one backup of everything. My personal preference is to back up to another hard drive. It's much less prone to readability issues than CDR media, and faster as well.

Renaming alone shouldn't lose any information, should it? Thanks to all -- you are fast!! |

I have always dropped the orignals right out of the camera and into my catalog program (iView). It has a script that renames them to the date and time it was taken (2004-05-03 01-01-01.jpg) then introduce the copyright infor and email url into them. then immediately save to CD-RW until enough to fill a DVD, then transferred to that. Same thing with all my edited and Prints.
With all the DQ's lately I realized that entering the copyright MAY void as original, soI keep another copy of them directly OOC to edit for an entry, and go from there. If I enter, save it someplace safe, until a week or so after the challenge. The rest I trash.
