I think with some of his outdoor portraits he's using composites. Like he's shooting the backgrounds very sharp and he subjects separately, also sharp but with reflectors. Interesting effect.

You think??? I actually sent him an email asking how he does that. I love that look.

I think...???

Did he respond?

I didn't study the images at any great depth but I guess my theory might be in the ball park. Even if you shoot the whole scene at f11 I don't think you'll get that effect. The backgrounds also look more saturated than the subjects. He's also be using strobes/flash on the people, in some of the outdoor shots.

maybe he is using that approach that somebody here used on a watch-face macro, kinduva hdr approach applied to multiple frames at different focus points instead of different exposure levels....?

might only need 2 or 3 frames for it.

yup, definitely outdoor strobes, and in some cases it looks like he did it in subtle way, so that it isn't in-your-face obvious. Sometimes the outdoor strobe thing ends up looking like people photographed in a studio standing in front of a green screen....

This is what I got back from him

Thanks Joe,

I am traveling right now and can send a more detailed response when I get back in the studio.

The two older ladies, image #5 in the People Of Charater look like they may have been shot in a studio and superimposed on the background but I'm not sure. I would say he changes things up a bit because the qualities in the images are not exactly consistent.

eta:when I say composite, he may be shooting the same scene using two images with different focal points. If that makes sense. Perhaps using a tripod and strobes, he shoots the people in scene...then another shot without them placing more focus on the bg areas and only the natural light.

I do really like his processing but I have to agree that he seems to be using multiple images. The group shot of the Scottish looking band really seems like he shot the backround, then each individual. How else could he have gotten the light so right on everyone with such clarity? Great stuff.
