Still slogging through thousands of shots that may as well be totally uncatalogued, my system is so poor. Don't worry, I'll find something by Wednesday!

I'm running into emotional attachment to shots. Something that I love..but others may not. Plus hundreds of CD's poorly labeled!
Secondly - taken with a less superior camera.

Ditto, so for me a likely exercise in masochism and a solid 4.

I am afraid this one will be way fewer in the average comments received, because of the sheer number of entries expected.

I understand the intent of your post: a plea for courtesy in comments. That's fine, but I do disagree with your suggestion that comments should be either praise or suggestions for improvement. The best comments of all are those that express a reaction (emotional, intellectual, etc) to your image, and say why. And that definitely includes the disapproving reactions.

Praise for the sake of it ('nice shot', 'soooo cool', 'love this', etc) is really of no value, and frankly I think qualifies as the 'thoughtless comments' that you wish to avoid.

And suggestions on how to improve are, to me, presumptuous. I don't care how anyone else thinks I should have taken a photograph ... I care only what they think of the photograph that I did take. (Of course, I know I'm in the minority on that one!)

I like the thinking here, and agree in theory to an extent. Many people DO want suggestions for improvement, especially when they are new here.

Perhaps there is a fine line between saying why you don't like something and how it could be improved. I take suggestions for what I could have done differently as a critique that they did not like the way I DID do it. I also get a real kick when I receive several comments with conflicting opinions about the same aspect of the shot.

I didn't say "offer gratuitous praise." I said praise what is praiseworthy . I accept your point of view regarding suggestions as just that, your point of view, but many would disagree.

I do agree comments that express an emotional reaction can be honest and helpful.

And yes, my original post was a plea to keep it courteous.

Well I do agree with you Ubique and also with Dr Confuser about keeping it courteous at all times.

If I can't give a room for improvement comment, or one of high praise, I usually don't say a word. I have chosen my favorite shot EVER and whether people cut it to ribbons or not, I don't care. It has an emotional connection, so whether the viewers see it or not, I'm thick skinned enough to just pass off anything derogatory (unless of course I find it constructive or helpful).

It's going to take a long time to go through these thoughtfully. I'm going to make every effort to study each shot and not just do a quick click and go on to the next. I bet we end up with over 1000 entries. What's your guess?

It's going to be a biggie. I would like to be able to do some heavy commenting on it if I have the time. I will make an effort to vote the 100 year challenge early enough that I can hit the gem challenge the rest of the week.

Hey all - I'd like to offer a bit of a side challenge - can I put it here or should I start a new thread?

The side challenge is you agree to comment on the first 100 (yes, 100!) entries that you get in the random selection. You can vote if you wish, but that's not required to leave comments. While this is indeed a challenge as far as scoring goes and all that, it's also a special occasion. I think you might just enjoy taking a few moments to really take in each photo (at least the first 100) and see what you can see in it. Offer that to the photographer. If at least 20 people agree to do this, everyone will have at least one comment!

Any takers?

It would be nice that this challenge has the most entries, the most average comments per photo, the most votes overall etc.

I am going to try to comment on all the photos myself.

I'm in...I will vote and comment on all...but will refrain from using..."nice/good" there is my challenge...hmmm

I will give it my best to do 30 a day for all 7 days, 210 comments in my original random order. (I am a one fingered typist that needs spell check soes not to sound stoopid ;)
That goal fulfilled my given to received numbers should be even.

Is there any hope that the SC will give more time for voting and commenting on this challenge...especially if you want us to comment on all...yikes...697!!!...but do it I will...how many days do I have to get this done???

Anybody who gets 100% comments on this challenge should get some special badge next to their name. For me- just tell me what you think. I have an image which may do well in a free study (it was taken this week so I could still save it) or go with something differeng from everybody. Now I am starting to think about doing the latter. Darn. Need to go through all my stuff again. And only one day left!

My fingers have been in training for weeks. And now that I know that ".", "'", and even "/." are considered comments, it'll be a breeze :-)

larf. But the real question is: How will you know which one is right for the picture?
