Is it me or do some of these challanges seem to have very similiar pictures...like, really similiar? I thought the shots were supposed to be taken during that week not two weeks before when a similiar shot (only varying in angle)was submitted. I had the impression that we were supposed to go get a new shot for the new challange? Or am I the only dummy attempting to do this? |

There is sometimes quite a bit of overlap between the month long Free Study and the weekly challenges - might this be the cause? |

For me this whole thing is more of a learning experience than just a competition to rack up electronic ribbons. So when I enter challenges it's because I have an idea that either fits the challenge or is inspired by the challenge. The voting/competition aspect is just a great way to get feedback on how successful my attempt was and what I need to do to improve my technique.
For this reason, I try to do something different each time because it keeps adding to my knowledge and experience.
I think you should follow the same philosophy. Rather try to focus on things you want to execute and enter those. It doesn't matter if someone else is entering a variation of the same shot each week - maybe that's a style they're trying to develop and perfect over that period of time.
The point is - and this really is just my 2 cents - is that it doesn't matter whether you're winning ribbons. What matters is whether you're enjoying what you're doing, and learning, and improving.
You're not a dummy for doing new shots each challenge. |

I think wishingdove is suggesting that some people maybe submiting shots that were not taken during the challenge period

I have also noticed this in a number of challenges, both Free Studies and individual challenges. I guess its fine as long as the rules are not broken, but it wouldn't be my choice simply for the reasons that Tygerr states as each challenge is an opportunity to try new things and improve.
I can think of one example that appears in the one of the current challenges (not free study) that a very similar picture also appeared in another recent, now ended challenge. The pictures are different but VERY similar. I have no idea if in fact they are the same person that took the pic (until the challenge ends) but one does look like an outake of the other.I guess they could have been taken at different times but it doesn't realy expand the portfolio much I guess and given the subject I would think unlikely.
FWIW both the pictures menetioned do fit the challenge very well and are very good pictures. I also voted them both highly and kept my vote when I noticed the similarity. I don't feel its for me to go around telling tales. Its just the similarity between the 2 that troubles me I guess.

You'll find that folks have things they like to shoot and will revisit subjects when the challenge fits. Often you'll see a second frame from a shoot used for a FS, for instance, particularly if the first frame did well in another challenge. When it comes to shooting set up shots, similar subjects will often result in similar photographs, sometimes from completely different photographers! (I'm thinking of apples, peeled apples, bananas, peeled bananas, etc.) In the past week or so, I've noticed that some folks have very similar shots in their top 5 (identical in one case) and it's just because they shoot something particularly well or have a very distinct style. |

There was one challenge not long ago where people got ticked over two VERY similar shots. They asked why people would go shooting together and both enter the same thing. Turns out two members were at the same air show without even knowing the other was there until they saw the other's entry during voting.
Free studies are more a chance to show off your best for the month rather than challenging on a specific topic so it's logical that if your month's best came from a specific challenge shoot that you'd have two somewhat similar entries.
But if you have good reason to suspect that an entry may have been taken outside challenge dates then, by all means, submit a ticket to SC and let them check.

I agree if that's what people choose to do I have no problem, it wouldn't be my choice as my current learning curve is so steep that I can get more from shooting new subjects.
Certainly there are a number of subjects that lend themselves to being pictured a number of times, such as the examples you give. There are others that I would say less so. As long as there are not rule breaches its obvioulsy up to the individual and what they like to get out of each challenge. |

I've seen some members that submit a photo that is similar to one they have done before, when they have a good subject that they know will score well. |

Lots of similar shots in the Action challenge. As said above, sometimes people cover the same event, either together or separately. I love that these two ended up scoring 19th and 20th, respectively:
There were even two jousting photos:
As for photos that imitate previously winners, I try to remember that DPC is a learning site as well as a contest site. If I tried to imitate one of IreneM's water drops, for example, I know I'd learn a lot.

I agree. The challenges seem to be filled with shoehorns. Maybe they are the photog's favourite and may have done well in the past but come on! I love a good steak - but not every day - it gets a bit samey!
I prefer to draw inspiration from the challenge. To the 'flower and pets' brigade(and you know who you are) I say try pointing your camera at a different subject once in a while. Who knows you might even enjoy the experience. :)

I didnt mean to bring up any particular names. I just wanted to make sure that I was understanding the challanges, as I am a new member. I just noticed several similar shots and wondered why they were being submitted in different challanges. But, many of you could be right and individuals just go shoot the same subjects and/or places. I suppose Im just "going with the flow" and trying to be as creative as possible in each challange...=) |

And the Tour of California made several appearances:
From the Action challenge:
From the Tilted Horizon challenge:
(I was terribly envious!)

Yep. There are numerous people on DPChallenge that are family members, or friends go shooting together, and sometimes a whole DPC group will get together (GTG) at some event or location. |
