Well if the title did not state it clearly - This is my first post here and to some degree a start into photography. I got a Canon G2 about two years ago just to have a camera to take pictures with. Well over the 2 years I have figured out I really enjoy taking pictures. I've done a mixture of sports and nature. Sports is kinda hard with my G2 because it's overall speed but with everything manually set it can be done. I really dont know much at all about other types of photography or how to approach it. I am rather interested in Street Photography because the pictures I have seen are compelling to me. I am also very interested in photojournalism - I know it's a rough market but I enjoy high-paced activities and even more so if it requires travel.
I am a "Software Engineer" in the working world - whatever that means. I do computer work, mostly application programming and a little bit of website work. I used to do a lot of Database/Network design work too. It pays pretty good (for a 24 year old it's great pay) but it's also very dull sitting in a room all day typing in code. I want to start doing photography on the side and if that works move entirely to it. But I don't know where to start! I know weddings are a good place to make a living? But I am not sure I want to jump into something so emotional. Are there some good resources or books on "Getting Started?"
I recently ordered a Canon 10D with a 50mm 1.4 lens. I plan on following that with a 28-135 IS for walk around outside stuff that's not overly important. Then a 17-40L, 70-200L IS and then a 24-70L. I've done some research and correct me if I am wrong - but that set makes a nice collection. I would also get a 1.4x extender at some point if I needed more reach. I recently got a Gitzo 1128 with an Arca-Swiss B1 head - it came in about a week ago and it is quite nice - the ball head was much more impressive then I thought it would be.
I am currently deployed in Afghanistan (for at least another 6 months) so I think now is a good time to work on getting the "gear" I need and learning how to use it. I already understand basic concepts of fstops, shutter speeds, lens sizes, dpi, ppi, and general photoshop stuff. I just want to know how to get my foot in the door and be able to support my life style with it..
I am working on, about half way though, with a website //bruce-on-the.net I am still toying with what colors to use and layout stuff so it might look funny. There are a few pictures I have taken with my G2 on there. Any constructive thoughts would be helpfull. I want the site to be fairly simple and have nothing flashy that takes the eyes away from the photographs.
Thanks.

Weddings is something I wouldn't want to jump into right off the bat, it is a very touchy area in photography and can be very unforgiving. Since weddings involve people, you need to understand the concepts of photographing people, which is (in my opinion) one of the hardest things to photograph and do it right (which I obviously can't do anyways). I know people generally start out doing portraits of people (Senior Pictures, Studio, etc...) well before they do weddings.
By the way, I really like the skeleton of your site so far, very simple and pleasing, and like you said, it doesn't distract from the photography.
Welcome to DPC, you will find that you will learn a LOT from this site. Don't be afraid to ask questions. You will find the people here most friendly and are more than willing to help. You will also find that people are quite active on this site and the forums move pretty quickly, so make sure you're pretty up to date.
I look forward to seeing what kind of work you will contribute in the future. Best of wishes to ya!

Yeah that's kinda how I felt. I have read a lot however and the ideas that seem best are to try and find a weekend job as a photographers assistant. Also I read some where that I should go to high school/boy scouts/etc events and take pictures. Then find out when the next event is and bring some printed copies of my work and try to sell them to the parrents. Might make some contacts that way and it would also be good practice.

Thanks a lot. It's a big contrast from my old website that had a lot more graphics and more interesting background. I still dont have the colors quite how I want them. Mostly I'm not sure how well the text contrasts from the background on other peoples monitors? Did you look at any of the photos? If so what do you think? I realize their not pro shots and they were taken with a Canon G2 - but I'm still curious if they are considered decent shots..

Thanks. And I hope your right - I've read a few different forums and a lot of times they are somewhat hostile to people that are "new".

Well once I get my 10D and figure out all the knobs I'll send a few shots in and see how it goes.

Hmmn... Indeed I am new - to this place. However I'm not quite sure that's what the challenge would be looking for. Ummn.. But if you must just make sure you photograph my good side.. Now which side is that anyhow? Drat.. |
