Hey,

My son with autism wants to start taking pictures. I am researching the best camera for him. Does anyone know of a good indestructible camera that's easy to use and fairly inexpensive? He tries to be careful with his electronic equipment, but we still seem to have to replace DVD players and CD players quite a bit. He's 16 and we are going to yellowstone this summer so I want him to be able to take pictures to remember it through his eyes. My other son with Aspergers and ADHD has use of my Pentax, but I think a point and shoot would be better for the 16 year old.

Any suggestions would be helpful. Are there any cameras that you have given to your young children that seem to respond well?

Thanks,
Julie

Toys R US has a whole line that I've looked at. Well, it was a year ago but they seemed nice.
Also Target has several SamSung that are good for travel and beginners and the price is right.
Kodak Easyshare.
Right now you should find several of the compac sized cameras that are easy to use and $100 or less.

Canon SD10 has great reputation for being indestructible, but it's over $300. Olympus has a newish, uber-tough P&S called the 770sw that can be had for around $170. Assuming you want relatively high-end cameras that also are tough. Otherwise Justine's pointing int he right direction.

I agree with Robert about Oly P&S, apparently they bounce!! And are pretty watertight as well.

A similar option to the Olympus (though more expensive) might be the new Canon D10 - assuming it is released before your trip.

I believe Canon just released one (one of the 300 or so released in the recent PMA show)... that has rubber and water/shock resistant. Hit dpreview of google to get the name as I have no clue... probably not available today though.

That's the one I linked ;) The Canon website lists it as available May 2009:

I have a Canon IXUS70 that I take with me to the pub etc (and entered a few challenges with it too in the early days). I encouraged my mother to get one due to it being simple to use (her and electronics don't work......I now refuse to try and exp[lain how to do anything for her on the computer)

I have dropped mine a couple of times, the case is scratched from being in my pocket, gets handed around at the pub and is still going strong. Depends how Rough he might be with it though.

Maybe a ruggedised one might be better, but for easy to use, and relatively strong, it does well, and the photos arn't too bad either (My top photo was taken with it, must fix that soon), and it doesn't look like a kids camera either...........

Good luck

Sorry about that - Canon alone has released 300 in the last week, so I missed the name.... Now if we could just have a 5Dmk with the 1-series focus... Oh like a D700.... Oh forget it, that's a different thing :-)

I did have to laugh at the stpuid marketing... Can drop from 1.22meters... 1.23 is fatal apparently :-/

I have the olympus as a pocket-camera. It's waterproof, and drop-proof to about 5 feet. For outdoors, its perfect. It's a bit weak inside, but I think it sounds like a great idea for your son and your trip.

Thank you all for your responses. I am researching all of the ones you have suggested. My son and I are both very excited about the prospects. I am excited for him to be able to take pics along with the rest of us.

I love the DPC community! I knew that you would be able to offer some great suggestions. Thank you for sharing!
