Just thought I would try it. Convenient, but I wasn't thrilled with the results. Certainly didn't need it based on the lack of shadows to develop, if I understand it correctly.

So you cant really over develop with Caffenol? |

Not with stand, but Tom would know best. With stand development, you give the shadows time to develop without overdeveloping the highlights; think high contrast scene. Similar to what I've read about rodinal, just more environmentally friendly. I'm enjoying the caffenol. I ruined a few rolls, but now I have the proper ingredients. What I thought was instant coffee was regulat Folgers.
I'm on vacation, so I'm shooting mostly film this week as I'll have time this weekend to develop and scan. |

By stand you mean no agitation? I'm shooting pretty much 95% film lately (for myself at least) I usually develop my FP4 between 12 - 18 minuets in Caffenol. |

So the Holga really should be classified a medium format gateway drug. To feed my growing addiction, I picked up a Mamiya RB67 Pro body off of eBay and a few lenses to go along with it from KEH.com. Awesome camera! (A tank, but awesome. You could probably use it as a boat anchor.) Here are a few of the early test shots with the standard 90mm f3.8 C lens.

Edward ( shutterpuppy) asked about my quick and dirty 35mm Holga mod. Here's the gist of it. I cut a few small pieces of packaging foam to hold the 35mm cartridge in place (above and below it) and pulled the film across and into the supplied (120) take-up reel. Next I put a piece of black duct tape over the film counter window. Finally I cut a rectangular piece of black felt and duct taped it to the inside of the film back to keep the film from rubbing.
My film advance ticks pretty loudly, and with some testing decided to count thirty ticks after each shot. After five or ten shots (I really don't remember) I started counting 27 ticks (as the take-up reel fattens, less advancing is necessary). This is the unscientific part. There are "click charts" charts on Flickr and other places that give better counts (allegedly), but there must be a better way. I have huge gaps between frames and only got about twenty shots on a roll of 36. Not that I mind much -- it was just an experiment.
Even though I used felt on the back, there's still some scratch marks on the film, probably from the front side, as I used the plastic rectangular mask. Next time I'll try placing felt or fabric over the mask (if that doesn't make it too tight) or removing it entirely.

Thanks for the tutorial Brian. I think it would be hard to get a full 36. Even with the native format you can miss frames or get overlapping frames. I'm curious...I how far apart were the early frames? |

Looking for some feedback from those more experienced than me, thank you in advance.
Is this a development problem or scan problem? or, just underexposed?
Ilford HP5+ 400, fresh Clayton F60 @ 7 minutes/20c (from massive development chart). Scanner is an Epson V700.
scan, cropped only
Lightroom adjustments (makes it easy to batch change the whole roll after scanning)
Further global correction in Nik Silver

Given the result after the Lightroom adjustments, I would guess its a scanner problem.
Did you use Epson's native scan software? I haven't had much luck with it for my V600, especially for black and white negative scanning. I use Vuescan (//www.hamrick.com/) exclusively, which lets you do a custom calibration for each roll of film scanned - really great feature that does a lot to improve black & white scans and completely rocks for color scanning. |

Looks like the scanner to me too, Ben. Are you using the Epson Scan software? There were a few key settings I had to change to get any sort of usable results for film. |

Yes, I use Vuescan, but I let it set the white/black points. A repeat improved the scan.
I didn't know you could calibrate the film. I'll take a look at that.
Jason...fantastic image with your Holga.

Not taken on film, but I think it's fair :)
It compliments my Pentax ME Super nicely, but now I can actually use all my Nikon lenses...
