Hi,

I'm new to digital photography and trying to build a workflow under Linux. I've done some research and decided that RAW has definite advantages I'd like to explore. It seems I can either use dcraw and this new rawphoto gimp plugin

//ptj.rozeta.com.pl/Soft/RawPhoto

Or mrwtoppm

However I have a fairly unusual problem in that I'm very colour blind. What this means is that I can adjust sharpness and dynamic range fine but have take the softwares word for white balance and colour fidellity. Okay I can make pictures that look fine to me but it would be nice if everyone else agreed when they saw them.

So my basic questions are as follows, does anyone who has used either of the pluginns know how accurately it picks up white balance from the a1's RAW files.

I've tried to at least start looking at icc profiles but not gotten too far. I probably don't need to worry about monitor calibration too much for obvious reasons but if I have my pictures printed at a lab they are going to come into play. with mrwtoppm I can add the a1's icc to the driver, is this worth it. Its a lot of work as I'll need to install windows to extract the thing I suspect. But I'm game if it will improve my picuures significantly.

On a not entirely related note I'm not sure if mrwtoppm is 16 bit, rawphoto is. Does anyone have comments on these two plugins regards quality. the auto levells feature in rawphoto looks very useful, however mrwtoppm is certainly more feature rich presumably because it specialises in minolta gear and is more mature.

One final point, honest. Is it worth considerring cinepaint which is fully 16 bit over gimp. If I use Rawphoto most of the processing can be done in 16 bit under gimp anyway.

Sorry for the lenght of the post, I seem to have a lot to learn.
