I downloaded Nikon's SDK but it only exposes rudimentary API to control the camera.. nothing fancy. I am exploring ways, if any, that lead from that API to actual binary code that can be appended/inserted in a firmware file for desired updates.
A few simple things I have tried till now with the D90:
- try to request a bigger liveview image, at present it is 640x480 max in that mode. It is def. possible since the video can be higher res.
- try to set a better interpolation mode for liveview zooming.
For one, the Nikon firmware files dont seem to encrypt all the info in there if at all.. because the strings with recognizable names etc. can be easily read even in the binary data.
Still exploring/looking for ways to improve DSLR usage quality (hopefully) via hacks... please share away here if/as you know more...

I've been looking into doing the same thing, toying around with the firmware. I'd like to remap the useless scene modes (nighttime, portrait, landscape etc) to change ISO values, and remap the Fn button to serve as the WB toggle. I just hate having to change my grip on the camera to change two basic settings. This is mostly a project for me to learn a little more about coding and probably brick my camera in the process.
Any progress? |
