How can this photo be better? I have now finally started using my camera to its potential, and now I just need to finetune everything. Critiques please! Thank you.

Wow, the lighting is great! The background is a bit distracting. Maybe get closer to the fern or crop it.

could also a lower number aperature to get a greater depth of field, and I agree with sonifo, crop a lil more.

I like the mix of blue and green in the background, they go well together, although the red smudge demands my attention because it's different. The background is isolated enough for me with the dof, although the overhang ferns on the left could be cloned out so they dont compete with the foreground fern. The right side of the foreground fern does have a few leaves OOF but I dont think detracts too much, at least not for me. The tip does seem a little brighter than the rest and as such has lost some of the detail.

It's not a bad shot, the above are just problem areas I would look at if the shot was mine and wished to correct or learn from.

I like the depth of field just the way it is. Lighting may be just a little too harsh on the fern leaves, but that's just my taste. Try a vertical composition, that is, when composing this shot, rotate the camera 90 degrees. There's just a little too much empty space to the right.

The harsh lighting you speak of was probably from my camera. I was experimenting with Fill Flash, but I only have the popup flash at the moment. Thanks for the comments!
