We'll try this in General.....if ti needs moved 'cause it makes people nuts, so be it.
I'm 53, and have searched all my life for a religious & spiritual path that both allows me the freedom to have the faith, and set of values that I believe to be worth endeavoring to achieve.
I don't for one second think that I have much in the way of answers; I have no great urge to deeply question much of what I believe, and I neither want to presume that my beliefs are better than the next guy's, or more correct, or want to force them onto anyone.
I believe that faith, and any kind of relationship with a higher power, is a deeply personal thing that should only be shared in the context of answering to genuine interest, and with said higher power by you as you believe.
I guess what brought this post into being is that I really love the people in my church, and one of the worship associates read this piece below that was translated from Rumi, and I just thought that it spoke so well of part of my belief system as it pertains to the God I know in my life.
Moses & The Shepherd
I really like the piece, and I just wanted to pass it along to read if you like to see how a more open, liberal religion looks at things.
This church that I belong to, the Unitarian Universalists of the Cumberland Valley, is a community that goes so far past the hour or so on a Sunday morning, and they truly do make a difference in people's lives.
I'm going to Honduras March 7-15 to take donations of building materials and tools, and to spend that week building as much as we can of two houses that we raised the funds to build.
My church is what inspired me to put my money, and time, where my mouth is as it pertains to doing good things, so I'm going to do so.
This family that I've found in the congregation makes me strive to be a better person for all the right reasons and I learn so much just by being around them.
Anyhow, I just thought that since the religion threads can be so volatile sometimes that I'd just share that I am happy with my church.
The way we are is that you're always welcome to come and see what we're about, but we don't tell you how and/or what to believe.
This is the short version of the principles that we try to live by and how we view the world around us: Unitarian Universalist Seven Principles & Sources
