Is there any benefit to converting an image to greyscale using my RAW conversion software versus converting it to a TIFF first then doing it in Photoshop or PSP? Seems like image editors give you more options in terms of using channels, etc., but maybe some of the RAW converters do too (mine doesn't). Just curious...

I do the conversion in Paintshop Pro. As you suggested, it gives me far more options and control. I haven't had much success at doing it with channels. I normally use "b/w film" from the effects menu, and choose a color filter to give me the look I want.

Well, that's what I do now. The BW Film tool let's you quickly look at different mixes of RGB and keeps the total at 100%. But I'm wondering if, for example, desaturating in the RAW software will better retain highlight details, versus first converting to an 8 bit TIFF then desaturating in Photoshop or PSP?
Maybe I'm splitting hairs here. Just wondering if anyone was doing it this way...

One thing I like to do is run 'em through the HDR converter after they've been desatted 'cause I like what you can do with the extra tone curve step.

Like most things photographic, there's no one best way to do something every time -- often the technique used depends on the characteristics of the individual photo.
The only way to really tell would be to take one or more sample/test images, make the conversion by several different methods, and then view the images together for a direct comparison.
This DPC Tutorial covers five methods of making the conversion from color to grayscale. |
